Treating Eczema

Taming the itch and more

One of the goals of treating eczema is of course to stop the itch. Other goals include hydrating the skin, making it less inflamed, lowering the risk of infection, and preventing further injury.

Dermatologists have a number of treatment options to offer—including Dermarest® Eczema products that have been specially formulated to treat eczema.

Depending on your specific type of eczema, and how severe it is, your doctor may recommend one of the following:

  • Topical treatments, such as moisturizers and anti-itch creams, to hydrate the skin as well as relieve the itch and scaling.
  • Antibiotics may be prescribed if a bacterial skin infection develops. Scratching at eczema can lead to an infection.
  • Antihistamines can help you sleep if itching keeps you awake.
  • Oral corticosteroids may be prescribed for severe cases of eczema. These medications can be used on a short-term basis to reduce inflammation and control symptoms. Long-term use of steroids can cause serious side effects, so you should weigh the pros and cons with your doctor.
  • Immunomodulators (immune-o-ma-du-la-tors) are drugs that affect the immune system. They may help reduce flares of eczema and help maintain normal skin texture.
  • Light therapy (phototherapy), which uses natural or artificial ultraviolet (UV) light may help moderate and severe cases of eczema.
